API

An API is an interface and set of rules through which software components request data or actions from one another. Its contract defines operations, inputs, outputs and errors; documentation explains how to use it.

Read definition

API endpoint

An API endpoint is a specific address and method through which a client accesses one operation, such as `GET /users`. Its contract defines accepted parameters and response behavior.

Read definition

Authentication

Authentication verifies who a user or service is, for example by checking a password or signed token. It does not decide what that identity is allowed to do.

Read definition

Authorization

Authorization decides which resources and actions an authenticated identity may use. Keep it separate from authentication: a valid login does not automatically grant every permission.

Read definition

CI/CD

Continuous integration (CI) automatically builds and checks code changes. Continuous delivery keeps verified changes ready for release, which may require approval; continuous deployment automatically releases verified changes to production.

Read definition

Container

A container is a running, isolated instance created from an image. It shares the host OS kernel, unlike a virtual machine with a guest OS; persistent data is usually stored outside the image.

Read definition

Container image

A container image is an immutable, layered package used to create containers. It contains an application and its runtime dependencies; persistent data should usually live outside the image.

Read definition

Environment variable

An environment variable is a named value supplied to a process at runtime, often for configuration. Do not put secrets in client-side bundles or expose them in logs.

Read definition

Unit test

A unit test checks a small unit of code in isolation, such as a function, against expected results. Dependencies are often replaced with controlled test doubles.
