Impressions in Google’s AI results Where to find AI impressions in Search Console and what to count as success

Search Console has a separate Generative AI report. It shows only impressions of links in AI Overviews and AI Mode: no clicks, CTR, position or queries. Growth there is visibility, not traffic.

In short

  • The Generative AI report shows only impressions of links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. They are already included in total web search impressions; do not add them together.
  • Google’s Help describes the report directly: impressions of links in AI features only, with no clicks, CTR, average position or query dimension.
  • Impressions in AI answers are not visitors: growth without clicks is visibility that must be checked against clicks on the same pages.

Where AI impressions appear and how they differ

What we compareRegular reportGenerative AI report
Metricsclicks, impressions, CTR, positionimpressions only
Dimensionsqueries, pages, countries, devices, datespages, countries, devices, dates
Queriesyesno

According to Google’s Help, the report counts impressions of links to your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no clicks, CTR, average position or query dimension; its dimensions are pages, countries, dates and devices. These impressions are already part of the Web search type in the main report, so do not add them together.

  • the report measures a shown link, not an unlinked brand mention;
  • the report itself contains impressions only; AI Mode clicks are included in regular web search but are not broken out here;
  • Google does not provide a query breakdown in this report.

Example: six-fold growth and clicks standing still

From Search Console charts in the 12 Oct 2026 audit, May → September 2026:

ProjectMaySeptemberGrowth
Project A18k112k6.2x
Project B7k46k6.6x

Values are approximate, read from chart screenshots and rounded.

For project A, clicks in the Q3-over-Q3 comparison grew only 0.95% while total impressions fell 12%. The periods differ and we do not claim causation, but the lesson is direct: impressions in AI answers are not visitors.

Growth in AI impressions: a six-question check

Answer “yes”, “no” or “don’t know” for your property.

  1. Is the Generative AI report available for your property and are the impressions not preliminary?Last days’ data is incomplete
  2. Does growth come from several pages rather than one?Report → page dimension
  3. Does growth not coincide with a single country or device?Country and device split
  4. Did impressions also grow (not fall) in the regular report?Compare with web search
  5. Are clicks on the same pages growing or at least not falling?Regular report, same pages
  6. Does a manual check of 10–20 key queries show the site is really cited?Independent cross-check

This guide’s own working scale, not an industry standard. “Don’t know” counts as “no”.

Which metrics count as success

  • AI impressions by page: which pages grew and how many.
  • Clicks and CTR on the same pages in the regular report.
  • Brand queries and direct visits: an AI answer can influence them without a click from results.
  • Manual citation checks on a sample of prompts (see the guide on citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity).
  • Conversions and leads: the only metric that confirms business impact.

AI impressions alone do not answer “are there sales”: the report shows no queries and does not see mentions without a link.

FAQ

Can AI impressions be added to totals?

No: according to the report’s description they are already included in web search impressions.

Are there separate AI Mode clicks?

No: AI Mode clicks are part of overall web search clicks; the Generative AI report has impressions only.

Is a brand mention without a link counted?

The report counts impressions of links to your site, so unlinked mentions are not measured separately. It is not a complete measure of AI influence.

Why is there no data, or very little?

Google’s Help lists two reasons: the property may not have enough impressions in AI features, or the site may be excluded from them. The newest values can be preliminary.
